How to Repair an Asphalt Driveway

Does your asphalt driveway show any signs of wear and tear, if so it may be in need of some simple maintenance and repair. Check out the 3 steps to repairing your asphalt driveway this spring.

Tools Needed

  • Putty knife
  • Blacktop brush
  • Broom
  • Stiff brush
  • Shop vacuum

Materials Needed

  • Crack filler
  • Driveway sealer

Clean the Asphalt

Using a push broom, sweep your driveway free of debris, use a shop vacuum to clean up any remaining loose debris. Once you’ve wiped up, use soap and water with a stiff bristle brush to finish cleaning the driveway. If you have engine oil stains on the asphalt, use a specially formulated cleaning solution to remove it.

Repair Cracks

Once your driveways cleaned off, apply a generous bead of crack filler directly into cracks. Use a putty knife to smooth out the filler so that it is flush with the driveway.

Seal the Driveway

The best way to prevent any damages from cars entering to your wet driveway is to barricade the area. Cover any plants or landscaping with plastic to prevent any chemicals from spilling into other unwanted areas. Then apply sealant according to the manufacturer’s instructions, use a special brush and squeegee, make sure it’s spread evenly and in uniform across the surface.
