Install a Solar Water Heater

Solar water heaters also called solar domestic hot water systems, can be a cost effective way to generate hot water for your home. They can be used in any climate, and the fuel they use sunshine, which of course is free! Solar water heaters are most commonly roof-mounted, with flat-plate collectors, which pump sun heater water into a storage tank. During colder months you can also install a battery backup to keep your water heated.

Install Solar Panels

Heating your home with solar panels is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint, and also save you some money! Solar panels convert sunlight directly into electricity by absorbing the suns rays into the flat units. The solar cells are made up of semiconducting materials, which absorb sunlight, when the cells absorb the sunlight, solar energy knocks electrons loose from atoms, producing electricity.

Install Wind Turbines

You may also harness wind power by installing wind turbines. Wind turbines work the opposite way of a fan, rather than using electricity to make wind, wind turbines use wind to make electricity. The wind turns the blades, spinning the shaft which connects to a generator and makes electricity.

Geothermal Heat Pump

You can use a geothermal heat pump to tap into heat in hot water and rock beneath the earth’s surface. The upper 10 feet of Earth’s surface constantly maintains a temperature between 50 and 60 degrees F. Geothermal heat pumps use an air delivery system, this pulls the temperature from the earth and uses it to cool and heat your home. Heat that is removed from indoor air during summer may also be used as a free source of hot water.
